Dear Kat,

My baby is very close to walking and the weather is warming up outside. What kind of shoes should she be wearing? I hear so many conflicting reports. Some people say hard soles, and some say soft. I don’t think soft soles could offer any protection outside.

Rob, Toronto

Rob,

While most people believe that soft soles are best, some still firmly (ahem) prefer a hard bottomed sole, arguing that they offer better support. I personally like something in the middle, such as the Attipas (from Korea) shoe or any other silicone or rubber shoe. Depending on how warm it is, and where the walking is happening, you have lots of options for your babe. While soft soles are probably easier on little guy’s feet, they may wear out more quickly. Best bet is to take your babe to a local kid’s shoe store, have her feet properly fitted and see what she likes to stand in.

Happy trails!
